Host
This drill is for an individual or small-group. Use a dirt infield or flat, clear surface for 5-8 minutes.
Prep
- Player stands in an athletic fielding stance, feet shoulder-width apart, knees bent, glove in front, flat back. No ball needed for initial reps.
Run
- From the athletic stance, step right foot, then left foot forward.
- Tap the glove on the ground twice, simulating receiving the ball low and out front.
- Return to the athletic stance.
- Repeat for several reps, focusing on smooth, controlled movement.
- For variety, perform the drill stepping left foot, then right foot.
Say
- Right-left
- Tap-tap
- Flat back
- Glove down
Watch for
- Players not getting low enough to field the imaginary ball.
- Players stabbing at the imaginary ball with the glove, rather than starting low.
- Players rounding their back instead of keeping it flat.
Harder / easier
- Easier: Perform slowly, focusing on each step and holding the positions.
- Harder: Have a partner soft toss or roll a tennis ball to field with this footwork.
