Bring
- Bat
- Baseball(s)
- Batting tee (optional)
- Coach for soft toss/front toss (optional)
Host
This drill can be run at home plate or in a batting cage. One player works with one coach for 8-10 minutes.
Prep
- Set up a batting tee at home plate, placing the ball at a comfortable height for the player.
- Alternatively, a coach stands 5-10 feet in front of the hitter for soft toss or front toss.
Run
- Player takes their regular batting stance.
- Player swings at the ball, making solid contact.
- After contact, the player immediately freezes, keeping their head down with eyes fixed on the spot where the ball was on the tee, or where the bat made contact.
- Hold this 'eyes down' position for 2-3 seconds.
- Relax and prepare for the next swing.
- Repeat for 8-10 swings.
Say
- "Eyes down!"
- "Watch the ball hit the bat!"
- "Keep your head still through contact."
- "Don't look up too soon."
Watch for
- Players immediately lifting their head to watch the ball fly.
- Players not holding their gaze at the point of contact for the full 2-3 seconds.
Harder / easier
- Easier: Use a larger ball (e.g., whiffle ball, tennis ball) on the tee to make contact easier to track.
- Harder: Transition from hitting off a tee to soft toss or front toss while maintaining the 'no-look' focus.
Why this one
