Four-Cone Attack Grounders

Kids come through a cone lane, field out front, and finish the throw, stops the heel-sit.

fieldinginfieldsmall-group10-12 min

Bring

  • 4 cones
  • 1 bucket of baseballs or tennis balls
  • 1 coach with a bat or just a roll hand
  • Gloves on every infielder

Host

Foul line or any 40-foot patch of dirt. 6-10 kids. One coach. 10-12 minutes. No cage, no bases required.

Prep

  1. Set four cones in a 15-foot lane toward the coach.
  2. Kids in a single-file line behind the back cone.
  3. Coach 25-30 feet in front with the bucket.
  4. One player in the lane at a time. Next kid on deck.

Run

  1. On 'go', the fielder attacks through the cones, no waiting on the heels.
  2. Coach rolls or soft-hits a grounder into the lane.
  3. Field out front, right-left through the ball, throw back to the coach or a bucket.
  4. Fielder peels left. Next kid is already moving.

Say

  • Come get it.
  • Out front.
  • Right-left through it.

Watch for

  • Sitting back on the heels and letting the ball play them.
  • Glove flipping up late instead of the pocket to the ball.
  • Stopping the feet at contact.

Harder / easier

  • Easier: roll tennis balls, walk-through the cones.
  • Harder: coach hits, add a throw to a live first baseman.

Why this one
