Two cones are a goal. Keep every ball in front. High reps, kids stay loud.

fieldinginfieldsmall-group8-10 min

Bring

  • 2 cones (the goal)
  • Bucket of tennis balls or softies
  • Gloves

Host

Any flat dirt or grass, 20×20. 4-8 kids. One coach. 8-10 minutes. Works in a gym with tennis balls.

Prep

  1. Cones 8-10 feet apart as the goal.
  2. One fielder in the goal, athletic base.
  3. Rest of the team in a shag line behind the coach.
  4. Coach 20 feet in front with the bucket.

Run

  1. Coach rolls or hits at the goal, mix middle, forehand, backhand.
  2. Fielder keeps the ball in front. A ball through the cones is a goal.
  3. 5-8 balls then rotate. Count 'saves' out loud.
  4. Last kid in the group with the fewest goals wins the water-break brag.

Say

  • Keep it in front.
  • Wide base.
  • Beat it to the spot.

Watch for

  • Reaching instead of moving the feet.
  • Standing up tall in the goal.
  • Watching a ball go by without a dive or drop-step.

Harder / easier

  • Easier: only rolled tennis balls.
  • Harder: two-ball sequences, or a live throw after the save.

Why this one

Range and pride. Kids who don't move their feet to the backhand.
